# Anara

> Anara is the AI workspace for research: import and organize your sources, work with an AI research agent grounded in your library and the live web, write in a citation-aware editor, and collaborate with your team. Built for work that has to be cited and defended, from academic literature reviews to pharma and biotech regulatory writing. Public positioning: "AI tailored for scientific research", 4x more accurate than general AI because every claim is grounded and cited to its source.

## Library

Import PDFs, Office documents, spreadsheets, images, and audio/video (direct upload, folder upload, or URL/YouTube import); organize into folders with custom metadata tags; search across the whole collection, including Deep Search over the full library.

## Chat: the research agent

Two entry points: a general-purpose agent chat scoped to the whole workspace, and a per-document/folder "Ask" chat with quick actions (Breakdown, Practice questions, Study guide). The agent picks from a real tool set per turn: searchLibrary, expandPassageContext, readDocumentPages, readToc, readLibraryMedia, webSearch, readUrl, searchAcademicPapers/lookupAcademicPapers (a 240M+ work index with citation-graph traversal), searchYouTube, extractFromDocument (exhaustive structured extraction across many documents), createNote/editNote/createFolder/moveFile/importDocument, createCitation (APA/MLA/Chicago/Harvard/IEEE/CSE/ACS/Vancouver/ASA), createImage, searchConversationHistory, queryWorkspaceDb, askUserQuestion, delegateAgent (parallel sub-agents), and MCP/custom-API tools. Answers carry inline citation marks back to the source passage. Settings > Skills adds a 111-preset reusable-prompt library across nine professional sections. Deep Search (the Max plans and Enterprise Max) raises the step budget for complex multi-step research.

## Editor

A Plate-based citation-aware writing surface for notes and document-linked notes: full rich-text toolbar (headings, lists, tables, code, math, callouts), AI Quick Edit plus a command menu (Continue writing, Fix grammar, Improve, Make longer/shorter, Simplify, Summarize, Explain, Comment), and one-click citation insertion in author-year (APA 7, MLA 9, Harvard, ASA) or numeric/superscript (IEEE, CSE, ACS, Vancouver, AMA, OSCOLA) styles. Notes support version history and export to DOCX, Markdown, LaTeX, PDF, and HTML.

## Viewer

A built-in PDF/document reader with highlighting, annotation (with comments, sendable straight into the linked chat), search, quick highlight, zoom, and page navigation, inside a tabbed, split-pane workspace (Dockview) that keeps multiple files, notes, and chats open side by side.

## Connectors

Reference managers (Plus+): Zotero, Mendeley. Cloud storage: Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox (Pro+), SharePoint (Enterprise only). Workspace tools (Pro+): Notion, Slack, Microsoft Teams. Life-science and research connectors (Plus+): PubMed, bioRxiv/medRxiv, ClinicalTrials.gov, ChEMBL, Open Targets, Protein Data Bank, Benchling, and Synapse. X (Twitter) is read-only and gated to the Max plans and Enterprise Max. BioRender (search of its scientific-illustration library) is a curated MCP connector available alongside the others in Settings > Connectors. Plus arbitrary Model Context Protocol servers and custom REST API integrations with user-supplied API keys.

## Collaboration

Every workspace is an organization with members, billing, and settings. Folders carry explicit visibility (private, shared/invite, team) and roles (owner, full access, viewer); folder-collaborator limits scale by plan (Free 0, Plus 5, Pro/Premium 50, Team/Max/Enterprise unlimited). Member management covers invite links, seats, roles, and per-member 2FA status; a Dub-powered referral program lives at Settings > Invite and earn.

## Settings

Personal (Account with 2FA, Preferences, Skills, Invite and earn, Connectors), Workspace (General, Members, Billing, Upgrade), and Advanced (Admin, staff-only, including SSO/SCIM).

## Plans

- **Free** ($0): daily AI usage, Auto model, imports up to 20MB or 120 pages, Zotero/Mendeley.
- **Plus** ($12/mo or $120/yr): weekly AI usage (half of Pro), Auto model, science database connectors, imports up to 100MB or 600 pages.
- **Pro** ($24/mo or $240/yr): twice Plus's weekly usage, every AI model, OCR, cloud connectors, imports up to 300MB or 10,000 pages.
- **Max 5x** ($120/mo) and **Max 20x** ($240/mo): 5x or 20x Pro's usage, Deep Search, no size or page limits on imports.
- **Enterprise** ($40+/seat): custom usage, SSO/SCIM, SOC 2 and ISO 27001, SharePoint live sync.

Paid plans can purchase credits that extend usage after the included amount runs out.

## Platform

Anara runs as a web app at https://anara.com, a desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux) built on Electrobun, and a separate Chrome Web Clipper extension for saving PDFs, protected PDFs, webpages, and YouTube videos straight into the library. Programmatic access: a REST API (`/api/v1`, `x-api-key` auth with read/chat/write permissions, or OAuth Bearer with `anara:read`/`anara:chat` scopes only, no write over OAuth) and an OAuth-backed MCP server (`anara_search_library`, `anara_read_document`, `anara_ask_researcher`, `anara_critique_result`). Enterprise workspaces can enable HIPAA mode (30-minute sessions, mandatory 2FA, HIPAA-scoped storage and model allowlist, MCP connectors blocked). The app UI supports English plus 31 additional locales.
